The Rules of the CONNECTOR Dance Festival

CONNECTOR Dance Festival is an open competition in which individual dancers, dance groups, dance associations, schools of dance as well as dance groups of primary and secondary schools can participate. Furthermore everyone else, who can be listed in the categories shown below.
MINI / CHILDREN / JUNIOR / ADULT
The competition has three skill levels: amateur, hobby and professional.
- Dance groups and dancers of primary and secondary schools
- Dance groups and dancers for whom Connector Dance Festival will be the first competition in which they compete
- Dance groups and dancers, who do not have any previous on stage experience or/and may have only limited skill level of technique
- Dance groups and dancers, who have trainings on weekly basis and have the techiqual knowledge of the given style
- Dance groups and dancers who have experience in different previous dance competitions
- Dance groups and dancers, who are highly qualified of the given dance style and who have many years of stage experience
- Dance groups and dancers who previously participated in domestic and international dance competitions and has been awarded
- Dance groups and dancers, who participate in theatres, TV shows and in other dance productions as paid perfomers
Please keep it in mind that the jury may modify the skill levels of the performances in between the given 3 skill levels according to the quality of the performance shown!
Mini: 3-6 years old
Children: 7-11 years old
Junior: 12-15 years old
Adult: 16 years old and above
The age groups refer to each of the three skill levels mentioned above.
The age calculation of duo, trio/quartett, group and formation:
- In the categories of duo, trio/quartett, group and formation, the age groups are calculated on the average age basis of the participants
- The calculation of the average age of the performers based on the actual age of each dancers on the calendar date of the festival.
- The calculation of the average age of the performers will be executed by the online registration system based on the rules of the mathematical rounding.
- The basis of the calculation of the average age of the performers is the calendar date of the festival.
- Before the competition, the calculation of the average age of the performers will be double-checked by the organizers.
Number of dancers in the different categories:
Solo: 1 dancer
Duo: 2 dancers
Trio/Quartet : 3-4 dancers
Group: 5-10 dancers
Formation: 11 dancers or more
Solo: max. 3:00 minutes
Duo / Trio: max. 3:30 minutes
Trio/Quartet : max. 3:30 minutes
Group/ Formation: max. 4:00 minutes
In professional categories: max. 15:00 minutes
2. GENERAL INFORMATION
- Each dancers compete at her/his own risk.
- During the registration process, it is a possible to entry age category and knowledge level upwards. Downwards entry is not possible.
- If one quarter (or more) of the dancers(from a duo/trio/quartet/group or formation) are applied to a higher knowledge level category with a choreography during registration, then they can not participate in lower knowledge categories with the current choreography. That choreography needs to be registered to the higher category!
- Participants must follow the progression of the competition and be next to the stage on time, at least 5 dances prior to their choreography.
- The same rule applies to the music – everyone has to hand over their music latest 5 dances prior to their performance.
- The music of the choreography can only be written on audio CD in audio format. /not in MP3, WMA etc./
- The organizers take no responsibility of the bad quality music presented. (In case the music stops playing for any reasons, there is maximum one more chance to try of dancing the choreography again, based on the decision and confirmation of the organizers!)
- The program of the competition is informative, changes may occur.
- The dancer or the group has to appear on stage within 5 seconds after the announcer has said their name and number.
- The duo, trio/quartet, group and formation categories are linked with age groups by the registration system calculating the average age of the dancers.
- The basis of defining the average age of the dancers is the given date of the festival. The average is calculated by the online registration system.
- In the CONNECTOR Dance Festival in- and outgoing choreography is not permitted.
- The organizers don't take any responsibility of any kind of incidents during the performances on stage. The dance teacher is in charge of taking actions in problematic cases like: possible risk of accident, breakaway or falling of the dancing dress etc. In these cases, there is maximum one more chance to try of dancing the choreography again, based on the decision and confirmation of the organizers!
Each group is required to bring their own music recorded on CD. One CD must contain only one track. Please remember that we require audio CD and the track in audio format (no mp3, wma etc. formats). The organizers do not take any responsibility for wrong formats and bad quality music. In case the music stops playing for any reasons, there is maximum one more chance to try of dancing the choreography again, based on the decision and confirmation of the organizers! The CD should be labeled as follows: dancer’s name, school / dance school, name of choreography, skill category,age group, start number.
We kindly remind you that the quality of the music editing is also an aspect of the evaluation of the dance preformances!
The stage / dance floor area is at least 8x10 meters, its surface is dance mat. The organizers of CONNECTOR Dance Festival take responsibility for the cleanliness of the dance floor and for cleaning it during the competition if necessary. The organizers will provide the lighting technique, however extra, individual lighting on stage cannot be used.
2.3 Props and dance sets
Dancers are allowed to use any props or dance sets, which they are able to take onto the stage themselves without any help. Props are allowed to use in each dance style. Dance sets can only be used in open, show and musical categories. Helping the dancer to carry the props and dance sets onto the stage will result point deduction from the performance. Props refer to any dancing accessories, which are actively used by the dancer during the performance and part of the dramaturgy of the dance performance. Dance sets refer to any objects on stage, which is not used by the dancers during the choreography. Any kind of props and dance sets, which could damage the dance mat (during moving them onto the stage and out from it), are not allowed to use and could result point deduction from the performance.
3. DANCE STYLE REQUIREMENTS
The variety of dance styles and dance techniques of the choreographies must fulfill the formal requirements of the chosen style, which are the followings on the Connector Dance Festival:
If the jury finds that the production does not meet these requirements, they will move the choreography to the proper dance style category without any point deduction.
To apply for this category, the choreography must contain the "language" of modern dance techniques (Graham, Limon, Art Jazz etc), or the choreography must demonstrate great creativity and show new ways of movements. The most important aspects of rating the performances are the qualitative use of gravity and ground, preventive approach to the body and the expressive power. The choreography may include different body language taken from different dance styles, however the modern/contemporary style must be retained as main characteristics of the performance.
Lyrical dance must focus on the style of the performance and in the center of creation must be the expressivity of the dancer. The choreography needs to be built on individual emotional states and moods showed on stage , which harmonizing with the choice of music, the costumes and dance technique. The latter can draw on the art of movement, as well as modern dance area as well.
This includes all performances that focus on the visuality, which has the basics of the visual spectacle and entertainment, therefore impressive choreographic construction is expected (group positioning, spectacular formations, costumes, liftings and jumps). The movement language can be chosen from artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and modern dance techniques as well.
Choreographies applied to classical ballet category should use pure classical ballet technique. The repertoire choreographies are allowed to present and the choreography can be performed either in pointe shoes or without that. The fidelity of style, precise, accurate execution of technique are the main aspects of the evaluation of the dance preformances.

Rhythm and punctual execution of the recorded figures are the main aspects of the evaluation of the dance performances. The choreography may include different body language taken from different dance styles, however the ballroom dance style must be retained as main characteristics of the performance.
The choreography belongs to this category, if it is taken from the genre of musical or operetta likewise productions with unique, characteristic costumes which aim is to tell a story.
The quality of connection amongst the dramaturgy and the choreography and the expression of the performance are the main aspects of the evaluation of the dance performances. The choreography may include different body language taken from different dance styles, however the actual storyline and dramaturgy must be emphasized as main characteristics of the performance.
The solid technical knowledge and the proper implementation of the actual folk style are the most important in this category just like the right traditional costume. However, there are no specific figures required for evaluating the performances, the most important aspects are the following:
- authentic knowledge in general
- preparedness of the traditional costumes
- at the choreography: reflection of the specific habits of the region in the dancing style, formations and in other details as well
- technical knowledge of the movements and the structure of the dance.
It is highly recommended to use authentic music and styles to apply to this category, however it is possible to compete with fusion dances as well, if the dancer/s indicate(s) that their performance as a fusion.
The main aspects of the evaluation of the performances are:
- the richness of the movement language,
- the use of isolation techniques,
- balance positions,
- classical ballet basics,
- variety of belly dance elements

This category is appropriate for all the production, which is mainly based on the movement interpretation of the music. You can mix it with jazz, modern, rocky, aerobics, gymnastics and aesthetic sports movement.
Evaluation puts extra focus on the harmony amongst the music, movements and costumes.
In acrobatic rocky category, choreographies must include the essential motives of the style and the variations of the basic steps and the acrobatic elements. The chosen music must conform to the typical acrobatic rocky tempo and pace. In the evaluation of the performances, the jury give special attention to the synchronization, the accuracy of the rhythm tracking and the requirements of the acrobatic elements in the different age groups.
The productions applied to this category should include hip-hop dance features, characteristics, elements of old and new styles; independent or fusion (popping, locking, b-boying, house, dancehall, street jazz, new style etc.). Furthermore, there is an extra importance on choosing the proper music (violent language should be avoided). The choreography must additionally reflect the hip-hop characteristics, attitudes, postures and the street dance styles. The use of acrobatics / break components are allowed, but must not dominate.
The category allows the use of props, but the use of dance sets are prohibited.
In this category the specific break style acrobatic elements (power moves, freeze) should dominate. The typical break style dance steps are allowed (uprock, down rock, footwork, popping, locking) like isolation. Important part of the evaluation is the originality and creativity of the performance.
In this category belongs any choreography, which focuses on mainly spectacle, entertainment and primarily based on fitness elements (arabel, rundel, flick, jumps etc). In addition, the performance may include techniques from modern dance, show dance, aerobics, rhythmic gymnastics, ballet.
If the given choreography does not fit into the above mentioned specific categories (because it is a fusion of more dance styles or there is no category set up for it), it should apply to open.
If the jury finds that the production does not meet the requirements of the chosen style, they will move the choreography to the proper dance style category without any point deduction.
- the use of own light and sound system
- any kind of help during the performance (counting, clapping, showing the steps at the beckground)
- the use of pyrotechnics on stage
- making the dance floor messy
- chewing gum during the performance
The five-member jury consists of dance experts, who have the technical knowledge of the style they will evaluate and know the requirements of the given dance style.
The jury shall be located so that they have a clear view of the stage and they must be at least five meters away from the front line of the stage. The jury members have to be for at least one meter away from each other, seated at separate tables.
The evaluation doc and juries’ notes can be asked for a view from the organizers after the announcement of the result.
No impeachment of the jury is possible.
The umpire is responsible for the complete enforcement of the Festival Rules with the performers and the jury. If there is any irregularity noticed, she/he is obliged to take immediate action, to act accordingly to the degree of irregularity; to provide the necessary punishment (e.g. point deduction) and to decide about any exclusion for dancers.
The umpire of the festival adjudicators is required to be thoroughly familiar with the Festival Rules. Considering the international nature of the festival she/he is expected to speak at least one foreign language.

- Characteristic features of the style
- Quality of music editing and cutting
- Message and interpretation
- Correspondence with age-specific features
- Connection and harmony with the music
- Utilization of the dance stage
- Formation sets
- Contact with the audience
- Artistic impact
- Costume, makeup, hairdressing
Deduction of points
- Ignorance of the rules and prohibitions
- Leaving the stage area during the performance
- Props and dance sets are taken onto the stage with outer help
- Any kind of props and dance sets, which could damage the dance mat (during moving them onto the stage and out from it)
- In case of violating the rules, the volume of point deduction can only be identified by the umpire of the festival
- Based on the seriousness of the violations the deductable minimum is 0,05 and the maximum is 0,2.
The jury could recommend the umpire to disqualify the competitor if:
- the performance can not be evaluated (see criteria of evaluation)
- the dancer does not turn up in the competition or on stage in time.
Registration to the Dance Festrival is only possible via the connector-dance.com web-site by filling the required online forms and sending/saving them before the deadline. Registration can only be possible until the end of deadline. After the final deadline the registration forms will be inactive and the organizers cannot accept any more entries. Amendments can only be possible in your own profile until the final deadline. The registration of the choreography will be valid as soon as the registration fee arrives. The annual registration fees can be found on the webpage. Payment is possible by bank transfer. Please put the name of the dance school and the billing address into the comment/message box.

The start list will be sent before the competition by e-mail.
All participants and choreographies of the Festival receive a certificate. In amateur category the jury will award the participants with classification (gold, silver, bronze) while in hobby and professional categories we will announce places (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc). In each category the three best ones will be awarded cups (groups and formations) or medals (solos, duos, trios and quartet).
Everyone is required to take part in the announcement ceremony of their result.
The jury will award special prizes and bonuses for the most creative choreography, most imaginative costume, best music selection and the best dancer in all age groups (children, junior, adult).
Protest can only be possible, if an officially registered dance school thinks that the rules of the dance festival were broken. The protest fee is EUR 85.00.-, which has to be paid at the same time, when the protest is handed to the organizers.
The protest will be judged in 15 days by an independent committee (including 3 members) set up by the organizers. The results will be announced in further 15 days.
A successful protest could modify the final results of the actual category. The protest fee is non-refundable in any cases!
To protest against the results of the competition is not possible.
